Below: A post card written by George F. Peters Sr. - writing about his work in Maine with Sammie.
Growing up in the boom of America’s Industrial Age, George F. Peters was surrounded by ambitious entrepreneurs and hard working businessmen. The year was 1885 - airplane designs were in their infancy, automobiles were just starting to replace the horse and buggy, and to purchase a loaf of bread all you needed was just six cents in your pocket. With a new world of work and opportunities around him, George Peters left his home - a small neighborhood near Woodrow Wilson Park - determined to build a career for himself and learn a new trade. With just a fifth grade education, George arrived in Maine and was able to find work at a water treatment plant. Through his years of work, and with the help of Sammie his waterboy, he was able to learn and develop more skills in the plumbing trade.
George decided to return to his hometown of Toledo, Ohio. where he later married his wife, Irene. In 1910, George began knocking on his neighbors doors - taking his first service calls. It was from there that George F. Peters Plumbing was born and our first shop opened on Detroit Ave. In his first few years of work, George installed boilers in the homes of what is now known as the Old West End, some of which still operate to this day.
In 1924, George and Irene welcomed their son - George F. Peters Jr., who would grow in his father’s footsteps. George Jr. attended Macomber High School where he took several workshop classes on plumbing and heating. He also attended The University of Toledo Business school and joined his father in the trade - becoming George F. Peters & Son, Inc.
The business continued to grow as the father and son duo took on more clientele and expanded throughout the Toledo area. George Jr. began teaching apprenticeship classes for the trade and George F. Peters & Son, Inc. hired on more technicians.
Tradition carried on, as George Peters Jr. later taught his two sons - Fred and Tom, who now own and operate the family business. Tom has recently brought on his sons, Zach and Jacob, to assist in the field - making us a fourth generation company.
Today, George F. Peters and Son, Inc. is proud to be the oldest operating plumbing company in the Toledo area, celebrating our 111th year. G.F.P. provides a variety of plumbing, heating, and cooling services - from furnace and boiler installations to leaking faucets - we have you covered.
The G.F.P. family is grateful for all our customers and their families who made it possible for George F. Peters’ legacy to continue to this day. We look forward to the many years ahead.
